Marriage in the Highlands

Religious Marriage Ceremony
A Religious Marriage Ceremony may be conducted by a Minister, Clergyman, Priest, Pastor or any such person entitled to do so under the Marriage (Scotland) Act 1977. In addition to consulting with the celebrant, couples must also contact the registrar.
Civil Marriage Ceremony
A Civil Marriage is a non-religious ceremony conducted by a Registrar. Music, personal vows, readings etc may be included and the Registrar will be happy to discuss this with you.
Civil Partnership Ceremony
A civil partnership is also a non-religious ceremony conducted by a Registrar but for couples of the same sex. Like a civil marriage, it is made legal when you sign the required forms in the presence of a registrar authorised to perform the civil partnership.
Both Civil Marriage and Civil Partnership Ceremonies may be conducted in:
- Registration Offices in a wide variety of locations throughout the Highlands. Several offices have ceremony suites set aside for this purpose.
- Other Venues approved for this purpose by means of The Marriage (Scotland) Act 2002
Humanist Marriages
Scotland is one of only six countries in the world where Humanist marriage ceremonies are legal. Humanist weddings have the same legal status as civil and religious weddings as long as a Humanist Society of Scotland Celebrant, who has been authorised by the Registrar General of Scotland, conducts them. |
